SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ……
How dark will I get? – There are different strengths of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a simple carbohydrate and used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products and aids skin colouration. You need to tell your therapist/tutor how dark you would like to be and they would be able to advise which strength would be suitable for you. The darker your skin tans naturally, the darker you will tan with a spray tan.
How should I prepare before treatment? – Students will be expected to prepare themselves prior to day of training by shaving and exfoliating 24 hours before (paying particular attention to elbow, knee, hand and feet areas), and avoiding using any perfumes, make up, moisturisers and deodorants on day of training. We also recommend you wet shave at least 8 hours prior to treatment to allow time for pores to close. You may also want to paint your nails and toe nails, especially if they are uncoated acrylics or similar – even base coat will suffice. You will also need to remove all make up before your tan.
What should I wear after my treatment? – Loose fitting dark clothes are most suitable and we would suggest you bring some flip flops to wear afterwards, as closed in shoes can make your feet perspire which can affect the final results of your tan. If you prefer to leave on your underwear during the spray tan process, then we recommend that you do not wear new or expensive underwear. We can provide you with paper knickers/pants if you prefer. Usually any spray tan that gets onto clothes will wash off during a normal wash cycle.
What about streaking and turning orange? – Spray tan technology, quality solutions, equipment and training has virtually eliminated those problems, so there is no need to worry. Provided you remember not to apply perfume, deodorant or moisturisers after showering this will also reduce any discolouration.
Who should not get spray tanned? – Spray tanning is usually suitable for everyone. However, caution must be taken if you are in your first trimester of pregnancy, you are allergic to self-tan (a patch test is recommended) or you have breathing difficulties. If in doubt, please speak to the Diploma Course Coordinator before booking on this training course or being a model.
What should I do after having a spray tan? – Follow guidelines above about wearing loose fitting clothes. Do not bathe or shower, exercise or swim for a minimum of 8 hours afterwards. Be careful not to touch your skin during development time. After your tan your therapist/tutor will show you that your hands are clear of tanning solutions. Any marks therefore, are due to your hands touching the developing tan. Please be aware that once your tan has developed you will be unable to remove it from your palms, wearing loose socks over your hands at night will prevent this. When you are able to bathe or shower you should pat yourself dry carefully or air dry. For best results afterwards we strongly recommend MOISTURISE, MOISTURISE, MOISTURISE!
What will make my tan fade more quickly? - Long exposure to water and sweating will fade your tan.
Providing students demonstrate a competent ability in spray tan application they will be certificated. Those who fall below this requirement will be expected to carry out 3 case studies and then be reassessed.
You will learn:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Patch Testing
- Client Consultation
